Looking to hire an aerial filming company?
A broad range of industries are making use of aerial filming to promote products, services and locations – but why? These visuals enable you to showcase your business and engage with your consumers in a unique manner.
Delivering stunning footage in the digital age is often crucial to the growing success of a brand or company, but if you’re looking to hire a drone pilot, it’s important to tick off certain factors so that the project can proceed successfully.
The first stage is deciding what you need from the aerial filming company, so you can then work out what you should question before your partnership begins.
- Does the operator have experience with photography and video?
- If required, can the operator edit and produce your video once filming has taken place?
- Is the operator familiar with formats and resolutions?
Understanding your business
When it comes to video marketing, it is crucial that the drone operator takes the time to understand your vision.
Whether you’re looking for a 360 virtual tour of your premises, or an aerial video promoting your products, it is key that the company you choose to work with provides you with an initial consultation to establish what you’re personally looking for. This may be conveying the history of your brand or showcasing your sporting event from the greatest heights, but all projects are bespoke.
As professional drone pilots, before the start of any aerial filming project, we take the time to gain clarity on a brief, and we are happy to offer support, direction and advice should you require. Initially, we discuss your specific requirements and form a structured plan. Your visions, aims and values are the first factors to consider.
Permission to film?
This is the most important factor in hiring a drone filming company. Your operator must be licensed by the CAA with the right filming permissions before starting the project. Don’t just take their word that they are, ask for them to send you proof of their permission from the CAA (PFCO) and insurance. Be very aware too, that if they don’t have a PFCO then they will not be insured, as all insurance companies require proof of the PFCO to cover the drone operator. And it is for this reason that the CAA is looking more closely, not only at the drone operators but also the companies that hire them, as they want to ensure operations are conducted by fully insured pilots and all parties take responsibility to hire qualified pilots. You might also find that your insurance is void if you hire a non-licensed operator, so always check and ask to see proof. All licensed operators are listed on the CAA website.
Additionally, ask about the operator’s history and understand the projects that they have previously worked on, ask to see examples and figure out whether you’d like to hire a drone pilot that has specifically worked within your industry.
Previous project history
Researching projects that the aerial filming company has worked on beforehand will give you the best insight into what they can potentially do for you. This is your chance to get an idea of the kind of video you’re looking to achieve.
Professional drone pilots should be utilising the correct drone technology and offering a range of cameras to achieve the visual style that you desire. Does the operator have the equipment to meet your needs?
It may be that you’re a construction company seeking a 3D drone view of your site, in which case the camera used would naturally be different than for a client who may be seeking a high-quality wedding video from an aerial or 360 viewpoint.
We use motion stabilised cameras to make sure that the shot is always composed and perfectly still, be that from the ground or the air.
Are you looking for complete production?
Many drone companies will capture the footage and then leave it to you to edit and produce a presentable media file yourself. If you’re not proficient in editing and creating short films, then it’s best to find an aerial filming company that has previous experience in transcending the footage into watchable effective content.
