Your Formula Life is a luxury digital and print magazine that focuses on the finer side of life inspired by the global sport of Formula One and Formula E motor racing. Birds Eye View Productions were commissioned to capture a day in the life of the racing driver ‘Max Chilton’ in one of his sponsorships cars – Twisted Automotive.

What we wanted
We were asked to produce a video that would illustrate a typical day in the life of Max and our setting was Shendish Manor House. We wanted to capture Max’s arrival in his Twisted Autotmotive car, driving up the drive to the Manor House and his entrance into the House. During the filming we wanted to capture some of the finer details of Max’s attire and had our ground systems in place too.
How we achieved it
We decided to capture all the aerial filming shots first of max’s drive up the drive to the house before capturing the ground shots. The weather was on our side and we filmed from various sides of the car. Max was very patient and happy to make this same drive more than once allowing us to capture the car from directly above and all sides. We also used 2-way radios with Max so that our Director of Photography, once our pilot had given the go ahead that the drone was in place to start moving. We filmed at 50fps and 25fps to ensure we had options in post-production.
The ground footage was captured using a combination of our cameramen sitting in the car with a handheld rig and our stedicam for Max’s walk form the car to the Manor House. The macro shots were caught during several takes when filming more general visuals.
Challenges and how we overcame them
The aerial filming of the day presented us with a couple of challenges, the first being the framing of the car, up the drive when flying the drone from above and the sides. The 2-way radios certainly helped but once our pilot and Max had run through some dry runs, the shots were taken with ease. The only other tricky shot was the shot to the right of the car where our pilot had to fly the drone under the branches of a blossom tree to track the car and then rise steadily to a height to capture Max’s arrival at the hotel. Steady hands a good skills from our pilot made this possible. However, before it was undertaken a walk through and familiarisation of the distances etc. were taken.
