What we wanted
Our client was keen to present the vast size of their park, the various lakes and amenities that they offer their residents. Furthermore, they have a wide range of sporting activities and by combining ground with aerial filming, it is a great way to show off the details of the park against the backdrop of wider vista shots. We also, wanted to get close to some of the activities to bring the viewer closer to the action and show off the amazing facilities.
How we achieved it
We worked very closely with the head of marketing, whom we had prior to the actual shooting day, created a very detailed storyboard. We worked through the list from 8am and captured both aerial and ground shots as we moved around the park with our client. We captured some initial aerial shots first thing in the morning as the light was great and then concentrated on the ground shots. The beauty of having a drone is that set up is very quick and you can have it in the air, capturing some amazing shots and down again from between 5 and 10 minutes depending what you are after.
It was the closer up ground shots of the facilities and activities that were the time-consuming parts of the day and it was important that we captured these as they day progressed as some activities were at scheduled times. We used a combination of tripods and motion stabilisation rigs to give a more cinematic shots where needed.
One of the highlights of the day was certainly filming the water sports from our drone and directing the boat and water-skier as we followed them around the lake.
As the day drew to a close we also captured the music event in the early evening, and wanted to capture the popularity of this event, especially how popular it was with families and children running around.
Back in the editing suite it was quite challenging to cut and present the various activities as there were so many but it was important to keep the momentum, In the end we used 4 different tracks to help keep its tempo and the attention of the viewer.
Challenges and how we overcame them
The main challenge when aerial filming at this venue was to ensure that all those people involved in any aerial shooting were aware of the drone and where we were taking off from. Fortunately, we also had additional staff on hand to keep other residents back behind a set distance. And lastyly, ND filters. As the day was very bright we were swapping between high ND filters which certainly helped produce stunning images that were great to work with in post.
