What we wanted
Drones not to be crashed and a good, clean game! No but seriously, we wanted to create a game that allowed three professional golfers, if they made the green, a way to drop their ball closest to the pin, whilst capturing the buzz and excitement around the first game of drone golf ever!
How we achieved it
The day before the shoot we ran some light tests at the amazing 16th tee (the tee was on top of one of the villas for the Open) as the game was to be played under the floodlights of the course.
Further tests were taken by all of the drones, flying at the same time and co-coordinating our call-signs and flight paths. We love this image of the drones before they started engines! It was important to test all 4 drones in the air at the same time, all pilots comfortable around each other whilst the drones were in the air and good communication.
Shooting day – After a training lesson with the golf pros around the controls of the drone we let them practice and not surprisingly, they were all pretty natural at flying the drones. In fact, as the session went on the banter started to come out leading us towards a competitive first for drone golf!
In capturing the event we had 3 ground camera operators and three drones, including the one we used by the golf pros. Our very own qualified drone pilot “Matt Williams” doubled up as a drone caddy to help the golf pros, if needed, with their flights.
Challenges and how we overcame them
Keeping the crowds back! No, being flown within a controlled film set we were ready. The hardest challenge was ensuring that the drones and their camera settings were set their optimum settings to deliver clean and sharp footage under the floodlit fairway and green. But as they say fail to prepare, prepare to fail!
