Horse Riding From The Air – Kimmerston Riding Centre
Established over 30 years ago, Kimmerston Riding Centre, is very much a family business that has extensive experience in providing exhilarating riding in stunning surroundings. We were delighted to have the opportunity to film the wonderful horses of Kimmerston Riding Centre at Holy Island in Northumberland.

What we wanted
We were keen to illustrate what an amazing place Holy Island causeway is for horse riders in being able to gallop over the beaches for as far as the eye can see. It was important to film the horses at full gallop as they gracefully strode out across the beach as well as capturing some initial macro shots as the horses arrived. We wanted to give the viewer a true perspective as to how vast an area this beach was for horse riders to saddle up and have an amazing hack that was totally uninhibited by any obstacles that would normally concern a rider. You, your horse and nature!
How we achieved it
We captured the horses as they arrived through a combination of general visuals and macro shots. We briefed the horse riders as to what we were looking to film. We also, ensured that they were happy with all aspects of the shoot and how close they were comfortable for us to the fly the drone.
In terms of communicating with the lead rider we used 2-way radios which were invaluable and we were able to direct them throughout the shoot. From an aerial perspective, we wanted to capture some very wide vistas to open the video with. we filmed a combination of tracking and slow panning shots to capture the horse from various angles.
We filmed with a combination of 4K and 2K, varying the fps between 25 and 50 respectively.
Challenges and how we overcame them
The aerial filming of the day presented us with no major challenges solely due to the incredible location and the huge open expanse of beach we were filming from. The day was very overcast and the light not great but once we set the camera settings to reflect these conditions we were set to go.
In fact, although the weather was not perfect, it actually allowed us to capture some incredible shots of the horses galloping through the water, with their mirrored reflections, creating some unique aerial shots against the wide beaches at Holy Island.
