At the very beginning of November 2016, Birds Eye View Productions were commissioned to shoot some video footage at the amazing Regnum Carya Golf Course in the lead up to the Turkish Airlines Golf Open. Named one of the best 100 golf clubs in the world by several reputable golf publications, it is also among only a few golf clubs in Turkey that can host 18-hole international tournaments.
It was important to illustrate the golf courses location aside the incredible Regnum Resort and Spa and the courses beauty. The golf course offers an elegant layout in the traditional English architectural style and we wanted to capture this from the air. Furthermore, the backdrop of the sea and the stunning fairways and water features formed important aspects of the course we filmed, alongside some lower to the ground shots giving viewers a true flight of the ball view from the tee to some of the greens.
How we achieved it
Starting first thing in the morning, we split into two drone teams and head out to the pre-arranged holes. We filmed with two different cameras on our drones to give us more options in post but also ensuring we filmed the golf course in all its glory. ND filters on, we pre-planned each flight before moving on to the next. As there were a number of golf pros warming up, we always ensured they were happy for us to film the fairways as they practised and not surprisingly, they were all very accommodating, even putting down their clubs to chat about our drones.
We had one team capture the wider, high-up vista shots of the course to show of its location and layout. Pans left to right and longer fly-bys at 4K and 2K, 50fps were great in allowing us to crop in in post and add additional slow motion movements. The second team were tasked in getting the lower to ground shots, flying low over the tees and up the fairways to the greens. Furthermore, capturing some of the water features and the clubhouse features.
Initially we had to shoot, predominantly with the sun behind us but this gave us some incredible shots where the very tall tress dotted around the golf course, casting their shadows over the fairways and greens. These shots really added some perspective and depth to the video. As the day moved on, we were able to capture the golf course and its surroundings were different angles that would help establish its size and proximity to the resort and sea.
Challenges and how we overcame them
The main challenge here were the cross winds. When flying low from over a tee and up the fairway to the green, as we came up over the canopy of the trees we were hit by the winds coming in off the sea. We overcame this sudden change in wind speed by flying the drone either into the wind or by having the camera facing away from the wind and then allowing the drone to be pushed, initially by the wind, in the direction we were turning. This removed the sudden camera movements when we came to editing the video in post or at least minimising them on some occasions where the gusts were quite strong.
