Romans Aerial Supercar Day – Goodwood
Birds Eye View Productions were commissioned to produce an aerial film of a supercar race day at the renowned Goodwood Race Track hosted by Romans International. The day was a great success and gave many drivers the opportunity to open up their supercars in a true racing environment, hitting the top end speeds that they could deliver.

What we wanted
We wanted to show off the incredible range of supercars in this world renowned race track and bring the viewer a unique experience from the sky. We wanted to capture the initial procession drive around the track and then the day as it unfolded from different vantage points on the track.
How we achieved it
As Goodwood Motor Circuit is located around their airfield, we first gained the written permissions from the Air Traffic Control division in plenty of time before the actual race day. Once on site, we met the marshalls and the race operator and were signed in and handed our media badges. We discussed what we were looking to film and ensured that everyone was happy with where we were looking to take-off and land our drone from and to. We also ensured that at the drivers briefing in the morning that the drivers were aware that there would be a drone and specifically on the procession lap it would be hovering over the grid as they drove underneath it. This would ensure that they were not surprised and more importantly distracted by suddenly seeing s drone.
Starting first thing in the morning, we captured some initial aerial shots of the tracks location and of the supercars driving in and arriving at the venue. A few minuted prior to the procession we launched the drone and captured the cars coming out one by one. Once they had moved off we positioned the drone over the grid for the drive by.
Once the grid had been captured we met with various marshalls around the track, filming from different angles and distances from the track. Before each flight we called the ATC, just to inform them and check we were safe to fly as there are 4 runways and depending on wind direction, they can change which runway is used.
And lastly, we were able to catch the cars parked on the grid and execute a flyover, low down of the amazing supercars.
Challenges and how we overcame them
The main challenge when aerial filming at this venue is to keep communication lines open and stay in touch with the ATC and marshalls. Filming wise, it was capturing these super-charged cars as they sped around the track and we achieved this by filming super wide shots as well as some closer up shots allowing the cars to come in and out of shot at speed.
