Uppingham School commissioned Birds Eye View Productions to produce a couple of videos, one of which was to highlight their new science centre. They were keen for us to show off the exterior and interiors of the building. Click here to jump to video
What we wanted
We wanted to show off the building’s location in relation to the main school and its surrounding premises, whilst illustrating its structure and design. Another goal was to film the building being used by the pupils and in some cases filming the classes in action. The period between classes was also an opportunity we wanted to capture as it was a great way to show the building coming to life. Further interior shots of importance were the entrance and ground floor, the pendulum and theatre room, as well as the 3 levels of science classes and the outside mezzanine.
How we achieved it
Most of the aerial shots were captured during classes that gave us a free reign to fly lower down and closer to the buildings whilst moving up and panning slowly around the building. To capture pupils moving between lessons we had the drone already launched at the end of classes and a good distance from them to illustrate the size of the building and the movement of the pupils. We also used our stedicam for some more intimate ground shots as the pupils moved between buildings.
The interiors involved us using our slider and stedicam systems to capture the various rooms and features that were important to the final video. We also ensured we filmed some macro shots and made great use of the large fish tank on the ground floor.
Challenges and how we overcame them
The main challenges when aerial filming was to ensure the safety of the pupils and staff. Although briefed, we ensured the drone was airborne at any time that pupils would be coming into shot as this allowed us to position the drone in the right position to capture the required shot and then land at the agreed landing site. We also used different ND filters depending on whether we were filming directly down on to the buildings or capturing shots where the sky and sun would come into play.

They provided a swift turnaround, were patient and professional about required edits and listened to our brief and our aims for having aerial footage. We have ended up with a brilliant addition to our digital marketing material - they managed to capture the feel of the school in a minute and a half! Thank you Birds Eye View.
Matt was very prompt at replying to emails and responding to client edits. He's personable on the phone and emails, and the final result was very good
Matt and his team are professional, diligent and incredibly hard working. They produced first class aerial content and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them or use them again.
